Growing Campus SIP Connectivity to Support Advanced Communications
Joint Sip.edu and VoIP SIG Workshop
October 11 (pm) - October 12 (am)
This workshop will assist the University in deciding their best strategy in a VoIP migration. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the SIP.edu initiative currently supported by several Internet2 members both in the United States and Internationally. The hands-on portion of the workshop will include the provisioning of open source SIP proxies, configuring VoIP hard, soft and wireless phones and establishing call peering sessions between the proxies. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will understand the principles of establishing a VoIP system.
Other topics included in the workshop are: infrastructure considerations, E-911, CALEA, and call trunking. The session will also discuss the Internet2 RTCAG architecture document and how to apply it to your campus not only for VoIP but for other forms of real-time communications such as H.323 video applications. Registration is available on the Fall 2007 Internet2 Member Meeting Registration page .

SIP.edu Infosheet Published
A slick two-sided "infosheet" is now available to help get the good word of SIP.edu out to the unconverted.
Draft ISN Cookbook
The ISN Cookbook provides a short introduction to ITAD Subscriber Numbers (ISNs) and instructions for enabling ISN calling for your campus, enterprise, or service provider domain. ISNs are a simple way to provide your SIP users with numeric addresses that can be dialed from devices that offer poor or no support for entry of alphanumeric SIP URIs. Recipes for several popular SIP platforms, including Asterisk and SER, are provided. more...Charter
The SIP.edu Working Group seeks to encourage experimentation with new campus real time communications services that use the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and its related protocols. The goals of the working group are to:
- Build a large base of SIP-reachable Internet2 users by making existing campus PBX, Centrex, and VoIP systems reachable via SIP
- Facilitate the convergence of communications identities by promoting the use of email addresses for voice and multimedia communications
Lower the barriers and reduce timelines for campus SIP voice deployments by:
- Publishing and maintaining a "cookbook" for deploying SIP infrastructure
- Working with Internet2 corporate members and other suppliers to obtain special pricing for SIP hardware, software, and services
- Building a knowledge base within the Internet2 community to assist others in deploying SIP infrastructure
- Promoting the use SIP for additional media types, including presence, video, and instant messaging
- Fostering experimentation with new SIP-based applications and services
- Exploring ways in which SIP services can be used by faculty, students, and staff to enhance university activities
- Developing best practices for scaling and securing campus SIP deployments
- Collaborating with vendors and standards groups to help evolve SIP products and standards
Milestones
Completed
- Completed proof-of-concept deployment(s)
- Published SIP.edu whitepaper
- Released first edition of SIP.edu cookbook
- Held first SIP.edu implementors workshop
